Junior Infants 2018/2019: Enrolment forms are now available from the school office or can be downloaded from our Downloads page.

Calendar:  We will be taking the photographs for this years school calendar from Monday, 6th November.  Children will have their picture taken together with other children who were born in the same month.  Most of the pictures will be taken in the general vicinity of the school e.g. the playground / picnic area / pitches / GAA grounds etc. but we will also be taking two groups to the Old Abbey and Knockroe Hill.  The pictures will then be sent to the printers and will be available to order after Halloween.  The project is part of our 5th & 6th Class Junior Entrepreneur Programme and thanks to the Parents Association for all their hard work and support.  We are also looking for sponsorship on each month of the calendar - please feel free to contact us should you own a business and be interested.

Confirmation 2018:  Meeting of Parents whose children will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation will take place on Monday, 6th November at 8:30pm in St Bernard's Church Abbeyknockmoy, further details have been sent home with school children regarding same.

Science Week:  Science week takes place from Monday, 13 November this year.  We have specially organised the visit of Killaloe Exploration Dome where children will have the opportunity to view the galaxy and stars around the Earth in a unique way.  The children in 5th / 6th Class will also be taking part in a Science Table Quiz in St Mary's Secondary School, Galway and a Maths Quiz organised by Tuam Education Centre.  More details to follow.

Cumann na mBunscol: The cross country athletics meeting that was cancelled in October due to weather conditions has been re-scheduled for Friday, 10 November, weather permitting.  Children in 3rd - 6th Class will be taking part.  Please note that trials were held before the Halloween break.  Due to large numbers taking part, schools were restricted in the number they can bring.

School Photographs: Please return proofs and any orders to the school as soon as possible, carefully return the envelope and bag and clearly mark your order and your child's name.

Parents Association:  The next meeting of the Parents Association will take place on Wednesday, 8th November at 9pm in the Community Centre meeting room. All parents/guardians are welcome to attend.

Team Hope:  Each year the children receive a leaflet about the Christmas Shoebox Appeal.  We will be sending these home next week.  This is a lovely activity to do with your child over the Halloween break.  All of the items listed should be included but please try to avoid inappropriate gifts that are also mentioned.  The completed shoeboxes should be returned to the school by Thursday, 9th November so that they can be collected in the school this week.

Friendship Week:  We will also be holding Friendship Week from 13 - 17 November.  This week is all about building positive relationships with those around us.  As part of the week we will be wearing blue on Friday, 17 November.  this is a visual sign to everybody in the school and the community that we will stand up to bullying and not let it control our own or other peoples lives.  Children are invited to Wear Blue on the day.

Anti-racism:  This year 5th / 6th Class are taking part in the FAI backed Anti-racism initiative.  As part of this, we are organising a Wear Red Day to highlight our opposition to racism in all its forms.  Children may wear their school unifrom or any other red clothes of their choice on the day.

Competitions:  Best of luck to all of the children taking part in the various competitions we have entered over the last few weeks including:
  • St Jarlaths Credit Union Art Competition
  • ICA Creative Writing Competition
  • Tuam Herald Creative Writing & Art Competition
  • The children in the senior classes have represented us with distinction in football, futsal, athletics, camogie and hurling over the last few weeks.

Congratulations:  To the Newtown NS team who won the Coláiste an Chreagáin 7-a-side soccer competition on Thursday, 16th October.  After a wonderful run through the group stages, the final came down to an agonising penalty shoot-out against Fohenagh NS.  Well done to all who competed, it was great to bring the Cup home to Abbeyknockmoy.

GAA-Football: Our coach, Seamus Cooke, will be returning on Tuesdays from 26th September to the 21st November.  Children in 3rd/4th should wear their football gear and bring their gumshields to school on these days.

Tag Rugby: Connacht Rugby coach Peter O'Hara will be taking 3rd / 4th Class children from Thursday, 09 November at 11.15am.  Children just need to wear their school tracksuit each Thursday.  Children in 5th / 6th Class have already enjoyed a great term with Peter and took part in the primary schools blitz in Monivea on Tuesday, 24 October.

Hurling/Camogie: Coaching with Liam Gordan each Tuesday from 10:00am - 11:30am.  1st / 2nd class are the first group to avail of this session. It would be appreciated if every child could have their own hurl and helmet coming to school on these days if at all possible but we do have some spares available if required.

Halloween Break: The school will re-open on Monday, 6th November.

School Uniform: Full uniform to be worn by all children, available to purchase in Anthony Ryan's, Galway or the Schoolwear Centre, Tuam. We also have some perfectly good, used uniforms in the school if you wish to buy these- just drop us an e-mail and we can arrange a time to see them. We also remind all parents that you can drop in any old uniform if you so wish. We will label the item and send home the money to you if the items are sold.

Welcome to Our School: Introduction

Tá fáilte agus fiche romhat chuig suíomh idirlín Scoil an Bhaile Nua. Táimid dóchasach go mbeidh sé úsáideach agus suimúil, ‘is go dtabharfadh sé blas na scoile don léitheoir.

Newtown NS is a Catholic School under the Patronage of the Archbishop of Tuam and is situated 18 miles east of Galway city.  It is located in the parish of Abbeyknockmoy, an area renowned for its rich traditions in farming, hurling, football, dance, music, religious devotion, neighbourly co-operation and support.  Its unique appeal results in a steady influx of new families who add to its richness and vibrancy. Extra curricular activities include music lessons, basketball, football, hurling, camogie, handball, chess and table-tennis.

Parents are a vital component of the school community and a good relationship with them is very important.  They are encouraged to become actively involved in their children’s education.  In developing this mutual positive relationship, children feel safe and secure within the school and therefore their school lives are enhanced. There is a very active Parents Association within the school who serve a two year term.  They promote general interest in the welfare of the school.  They organise various activities and also, through social events and draws, provide finance for new and improved facilities in the school. The Parents Association also play an important role in the policy development process and decision making within the school through consultation.
